In the 15th century, thieves used this blend of oils to protect themselves from the plague when stealing from the sick and dying. When the thieves were caught, the authorities offered leniency in exchange for their recipe of the secret mixture that protected them from illness.
Now I use my Thieves spray as a hand sanitizer, to ward off COVID 19! Every member of my family carries Thieves Spray with them!

How do I use Thieves Essential Oil?
Thieves essential oil can be diffused into the air (A=Aromatic), applied topically (T=Topical) to the skin and taken orally (I=Internal).
Here are some of my favorite ways to experience the benefits of essential oils using Thieves Essential Oil and Thieves Vitality Essential Oil (for internal use).
- Foot Massage for Immune Support/Wellness – Add 1 drop of Thieves Essential Oil to 4 drops of carrier oil (Jojoba oil or Sweet Almond oil), rub onto the bottoms of the feet. (T)
- Sore throat – Put 2 drops of Thieves Vitality into a glass of water and gargle (I). Dilute 1 drop Thieves Essential oil with 4 drops of carrier oil (Jojoba or Sweet Almond Oil) and apply to the throat (T).
- Cold and Flu – Diffuse Thieves in your Desert Mist Diffuser periodically for 20-25 minutes at a time throughout the day (A). Put one drop on the bottom of my foot and rub feet together (T).
- Warm drink – Add 1 drop of Thieves Vitality to a cup of herbal tea or other warm drink to give it a spicy twist (I).
- Cleaning Power – Add a drop of Thieves Essential Oil to laundry water, dishwater, dishwasher, or mop water to add extra cleaning power and a fresh scent.
- Bathwater – Add 10 drops of Thieves Essential Oil to your warm bath water along with 1/2-1 Cup of Epsom Salt on a cold night to stay extra warm.
Young Living has an entire line of products containing Thieves Essential Oils. Their products are fantastic! They have personal care products including toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash, and soap. Products for wellness include cough drops and hand sanitizer. The Thieves hand sanitizer actually smells great unlike some others on the market. We always carry Thieves sanitizer when traveling on an airplane! There are several cleaning products for general household cleaning and laundry as well. Find out more about Thieves products.
The Thieves product that I use the most besides just using the Thieves Essential Oil is definitely Thieves Household Cleaner. It is highly concentrated and a little bit goes a long way! I put one ounce of Thieves Household Cleaner in a spray bottle and add 30 ounces of water. This is what I use for general cleaning. I use it on countertops, stovetop, spills, animal accidents, toilet area, etc. I use a capful (or less) to clean inside the toilet bowl. I also add 1/2-1 capful to the dishwasher to increase cleaning power and eliminate odor.
Not all essential oils are created equally. I have been using Young Living oils for the past 6 years and I am very impressed with the quality of their products. Young Living has high standards and strict adherence to quality production standards. As a Young Living Member, I receive 24% off of the retail price of their products. I also earn free products being a loyal customer.
I personally buy a lot of Young Living Essential Oils and other products of theirs. Every member of my family uses their products. This year everyone’s Christmas stocking had a bottle of Thieves Spray! I carry a bottle in my purse at all times! My daughter received a few bottles of her favorite oils as gifts – Lavender Essential Oil and Deep Relief Essential Oil. Check out my wall rack with my collection of essential oils!
I can honestly say that I use one of their oils or other products every single day!! Today I have used Deep Relief Essential Oil on a tight muscle, a capful of Thieves Household Cleaner in the dishwasher, and in my diffuser a blend of Peppermint, Lemon, and Frankincense Essential Oils!
I did not become a member of Young Living to sell the oils and start a business. I became a member because I knew I wanted to use the oils and why not get them at a discounted price and earn free products just by purchasing oils that I would be buying anyway! Although many people do get into Young Living to make it a business, that just wasn’t my goal.
I wanted to replace some of the over the counter medications that we use and to replace harmful chemical cleaners and personal care products with non-toxic, natural alternatives. I make several of my own personal care products, and you can find a few of my recipes at these links. I make sunscreen, body wash, bath salts, shaving cream, dish soap, chapstick, insect repellant spray, air fresheners, and wool dryer balls (so far). I will be sharing more of my recipes in the future! All of these recipes use Young Living essential oils. I’m always trying new recipes for nontoxic products in my quest to eliminate harmful chemicals from the products used in my home.
Here is a beautiful diffuser I found on Amazon that provides 12 hours of continuous mist and is whisper quiet. My daughter has this diffuser.
My goal is to share the benefits of essential oils and to help others learn how to replace some over-the-counter medications and toxic cleaning products with natural, powerful essential oil products. Let me know if you are interested in learning more about Young Living, or in becoming a member in the comments below.

January 14, 2019 9:06 amThis sounds lovely! Unfortunately, my skin reacts to some of these oils when applied topically so I couldn’t use it that way but I’d be very interested in trying it aromatically. I bet it smells amazing! x

January 14, 2019 10:58 amHi Sophie!
My skin is very sensitive and often reacts when oils are applied topically as well. I don’t have any issues when I apply oils to the bottoms of my feet, which is recommended. Diffusing the oils is always a great choice too! Thieves does smell fabulous! Thanks for visiting and commenting! 🙂
