I was first introduced to the healing powers of essential oils about 6 years ago. I was teaming up with a new friend to promote my yoga classes. We met when she attended my local yoga classes. She was promoting health and wellness too, through the use of essential oils. She asked me to participate in a video shoot to promote wellness through yoga and the use of essential oils.
The day before the photo shoot, I spilled hot Malt-o-Meal (right out of the microwave) onto my arm and had a burn spot on my inner wrist. OUCH! When my new friend saw this she told me I needed to use some Lavender essential oil on the burn. I used some that day and continued to use it for a few days. The burn healed very quickly! The redness and pain went away within just a few days. My arm healed much quicker than if I had just done nothing. I was very impressed with the results of using the Lavender oil!
After learning more about the benefits of the oils and the Young Living cleaning products, I bought a Premium Starter Kit with Young Living to try them out. I am now a firm believer in the usefulness and effectiveness of essential oils! Check out what is included in the Young Living Premium Starter Kit with the Dewdrop diffuser here.
Lavender is my number one oil that I never go without. I have a bottle in my purse, in my car, on my nightstand, and in my yoga practice space. My husband has a bottle in his essential oil bag and my daughter too. I always have a couple of back up bottles in my essential oils wall rack so I don’t run out! Check out my awesome rack! This doesn’t even show all of my oils. They are all over the house – kitchen window sill, bathroom counter, nightstand…
Lavender oil has a long list of uses. I will share with you the most common ways that we use Lavender essential oil (EO) in our home.
- Sleep aide – Place a drop in your palm and rub the palms together. Swipe the palms of the hands across your pillowcase. Or rub the essential oil onto the bottoms of the feet. Diffuse into the air in the bedroom.
- Anxiety relief – Place a drop in the palm, rub palms together. Cup the hands over the nose and breathe in deeply for 10-12 breaths. Or put 4-6 drops in your diffuser and diffuse.
- Allergy relief – Place a drop in the palm, rub palms together. Cup the hands over the nose and eyes with the eyes open. Take 10-12 breaths. I also use this diffuser blend for allergies: 6 drops Lavender EO, 3 drops Lemon EO and 1 drop Peppermint EO added to the diffuser.
- Bug bites – Apply lavender neat to bug bites to reduce the itch or pain.
- Sunburn – Add a drop or two to a carrier oil (sweet almond oil or jojoba oil) and spread on the affected skin.
- Burns – If a small area, apply neat. For a larger area, add a few drops to a carrier oil (sweet almond oil or jojoba oil) and apply to the skin.
- Pet anxiety – One of my dogs has some anxiety. I put Lavender on her paws to help calm her down. I put one drop in my palm, rub my hands together then rub my hands on her paw pads.
In the Reference Guide for Essential Oils by Connie and Alan Higley, there are over 50 suggested uses of this oil. I frequently use Lavender as one of the oils in my diffuser blends, as it blends well with most oils and it is a calming oil. The Higley’s describe the oil as having a scent that is floral, sweet, herbaceous, balsamic, with woody undertones.
Lavender essential oil is known for being a universal oil. It is traditionally known for balancing the body and working wherever there is a need. If in doubt of which oil to use, try Lavender oil. Essential oils are chemically very heterogeneous – meaning they are very diverse in their effects and can perform several different functions (Higley 2013).
I prefer Young Living (YL) Essential Oils due to their high-quality standards. Not all essential oils are created equally. Young Living does not add synthetics or cheap fillers or produce their products through unethical standards. They have stringent testing to allow only high quality, therapeutic grade products to get their seal of approval. Read about their high-quality products here. I have purchased the cheap oils in the past and have had them go bad! I’m sticking with Young Living Essential Oils!
I decided to join Young Living as a wholesale member so I can get products at 24% off of the retail price. I also earn rewards toward free product monthly as a member of the essential rewards program. You can purchase their products as a retail member if desired. Here are a few recommended products to get you started with essential oils if you just want to purchase as a retail customer.
- Lavender Essential Oil
- Desert Mist Diffuser
- Essential Oils Metal Wall Rack If you have quite a few oils already, consider getting this wall rack! It is awesome! It can also be used for nail polish. My husband bought the one pictured above for me for a Christmas gift a few years ago!
If you are ready to try essential oils, this is a great one to start out with – Young Living Lavender Essential Oil. It is also a fantastic oil to add to your homemade body care products. You can try adding a drop or two to unscented body care products.
Essential oils are very potent. Only a very small amount is needed. If you have sensitive skin make sure to dilute with a carrier oil. I myself have sensitive skin. I am able to use Lavender essential oil neat on bug bites and have also used it neat on small burns, like the burn I had on my arm with the Malt-o-Meal.

October 10, 2018 3:56 pmI too love essential oils! Lavender is one of my favorites, but alas, my husband hates the smell. So, while he snores, I lay awake wishing that I could just a little lavender and drift off to sleep. I have not actually used it on a burn. Good to know!

October 10, 2018 4:17 pmCedarwood is another oil I have used to assist drifting off to sleep, either by diffusing it or swiping it across my pillowcase. Some people love the scent, others not so much. I love Young Living’s Cedarwood – a warm, woody scent. My daughter loves Peace and Calming blend to help her relax and fall asleep. She rubs a drop or 2 onto the bottoms of her feet. Just a few others you might want to try!

October 10, 2018 2:11 pmI use Lavender for EVERYTHING! I make liquid fabric softener with it and add it to wool dryer balls instead of using dryer sheets. But my favorite use is diffusing it at night. And I do love your EO shelf! I must invest in one very soon.

October 10, 2018 3:39 pmMy husband bought the rack for me. I need to ask him where he got it and add that information to the post. The bottles of oil fit on the shelves perfectly and it holds many bottles!

October 10, 2018 10:49 amYes! Lavender is my go-to essential oil for so many things. I also have an anxious pupper and at night I’ll sometimes put the diffuser on with some lavender essential oil in it and she relaxes and goes right to sleep. I’ll have to try putting it on her paws like you suggested!
Julie
October 10, 2018 3:46 pmAfter I rub some on her paws, I then just run my hand over her head and ears too. Sounds like it helps her relax, nice!
